Special Press Conference on Friday 12th October 2012

Dear Editors of National Newspapers and Directors of Radio and Television Stations,

The FUTA will be holding a Special Press Conference on Friday 12th October 2012 at 10.30am at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), Open University of Sri Lanka, Nawala, Nugegoda to explain the decision to call off the three months old Trade Union Action with effect from tomorrow.

Let me also thankyou for your help and strength in the context of our historic struggle in taking the message to the people that the government carries the obligation to allocate financial provisions for education in line with the UNESCO Benchmark of 6% and to ensure that universities are granted greater autonomy and freedom for academics to maximize their professional potential.

We also thank you for the manner in which you have resisted organized initiatives of those with vested interests to suppress the truth concerning our grievances.

We assure you of the support of the national academic community in your own professional struggles to restore media freedom and the democratic right to information.

Earnestly requesting you once again to cover our Press Conference tomorrow Friday 12th October at the Open University of Sri Lanka.

Yours faithfully,

Dr. Mahim Mendis
FUTA Media Spokesman

I have observed one important thing in this very reasonable fight initiated by FUTA. In our country every settlement has to go through a Rajapaksha related-attachment. This is not a good sign for the country.
In this case SB became a ‘straw man which scare crows”. Many of the minister have become like this.
In one way SB should find this KARMA due to his indecent mouth. He should know how to talk to most educated people in the country.

People who support Rajapaksha’s must learn a lesson now about their “condom politics”..Usually Rajapkshas proofread the speeches given by Ministers, they are not random speeches. I have similar early experience with Rajapakshs…

Anyway, the ultimate decision by FUTA is correct, since they have opened to the world the nakedness of our politicians. How badly they treat Education in SL. Good work done by FUTA. Hats off to all the great University teachers.

Citizen, (Early Rajapaksha supporter, not a supporter any more)
